When I wrote my first article about working at the Elgin Business Resource Centre (EBRC) last summer, I was still trying to figure out what kind of environment I wanted to be a part of, both professionally and personally. I had just finished high school and was preparing to start my first year at Fanshawe College for business and accounting. I didn’t know it then, but that summer at EBRC would lay the foundation for a year full of change, growth, and learning.
My first year of college was both challenging and eye-opening. There were definitely moments when I felt overwhelmed trying to balance school, work, and personal responsibilities; it forced me to grow up quickly. I learned a lot about accountability, especially when it came to managing my time and staying on top of assignments. Unlike high school, there’s no one checking in every day to make sure you’re doing what you need to do. You learn to show up for yourself, even when it’s hard. And that lesson, although tough, has been one of the most valuable so far.
Coming back to EBRC this summer felt different in the best way. Walking through the doors again, I felt a deeper sense of appreciation not just for the opportunity to work here, but for the people and environment that make this place feel like a second home.
The team here continues to amaze me with their dedication to supporting local businesses and their constant drive to improve the services they offer. They treat each client with care and work hard to ensure that St. Thomas and Elgin County continues to grow and thrive.
Now, with a year of college behind me and another summer at EBRC underway, I’ve noticed a shift in how I carry myself. I feel more confident speaking up, asking questions, and taking initiative. I’m starting to understand what it means to not just do a job, but to bring value to a team. I’ve learned that professionalism doesn’t mean you have to lose your personality, it means knowing when to lead, when to listen, and how to grow from every experience.
Being back here reminds me why I chose this path in the first place. It’s not just about business and numbers, it’s about community, connection, and making an impact.
I’m incredibly grateful to the team at EBRC for continuing to support and challenge me. This experience has shown me that growth doesn’t happen all at once, it happens slowly, quietly, and often when you least expect it.
I’m grateful for where I’ve been and where I’ve returned, but I’m even more excited for what’s ahead.
