Rooted In Balance: Balancing Plants, Passion, and Family Life

Joel Jarvis, Owner of Advantage Horticulture

Running a business, raising a family, and maintaining personal well-being can feel like an impossible juggling act. For Joel, the owner of Advantage Horticulture, each day is a delicate balance of routines, strategies, and tough decisions. But he doesn’t do it alone. Alongside his wife, Kristine Jarvis, the owner of Elgin Media Group, Joel navigates the chaos of professional and family life with shared commitment and support. Together, they show that true success is not just about surviving; it’s about thriving.

With three teenagers at home, Joel and Kristine’s schedules are packed as they balance business and family commitments. They’ve learned the value of setting weekly goals to stay organized. “Every morning, Kristine and I sit down over coffee to discuss the day ahead,” Joel says. This daily ritual helps them align their personal and professional lives.

Family meals are sacred in their home. Phones are off-limits at the dinner table. “Our dinner rule of no cell phones is non-negotiable,” Joel shares. “It’s a chance to share successes and challenges.” By prioritizing these moments, Joel and Kristine ensure their family bonds stay strong despite the demands of their busy lives.

Running separate businesses adds complexity, but Joel and Kristine have learned to leverage each other’s strengths. Kristine’s expertise in sales and marketing has shaped the promotion of Advantage Horticulture, while Joel’s problem-solving skills support Kristine in her role as publisher of Life in Elgin magazine. Their respect for one another allows them to grow both professionally and personally, turning challenges into opportunities through collaboration, trust, and a shared vision.

For Joel, faith and family provide clarity when personal and work obligations overlap. “When things get busy, faith and family are my non-negotiables,” he says. This strong foundation allows him to navigate both business and family life without compromise.

Joel also finds stress relief in his work at Advantage Horticulture. Tending to plants provides a therapeutic break, blending work and relaxation. “My greenhouse feels like a tropical escape,” he says. For Joel, plants are not just part of his business; they are a source of peace and balance.

Last year, Joel had the opportunity to fine-tune his business strategy as a finalist in The Pitch, an event that will return on January 29th, 2025, at St. Anne’s Community Center. Supported by the Elgin Business Resource Centre (EBRC) and the local community, the competition helped him refine his business plan and approach challenges with renewed focus.

“The support I received helped me think about areas I hadn’t considered before,” he reflects. “I’d recommend these resources to any aspiring business owner.”

Joel also credits the Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC) for its guidance and ongoing support, a resource trusted by businesses in the community for continued growth.

Advantage Horticulture goes beyond decorating spaces. It’s about creating environments that promote well-being, creativity, and productivity. Adding plants to an office can improve air quality, reduce stress, and boost focus and energy.

In fact, 58% of workers say they feel happier and more comfortable when plants are part of their workspace. Plants don’t just enhance the atmosphere; they also increase creativity by 15% and improve focus by 6%. Incorporating plants into your office doesn’t just brighten the space; it energizes the entire workday, helping employees stay motivated, engaged, and more productive.

Joel and his team ensure your plants are professionally maintained, creating a healthier atmosphere that supports performance and morale. According to Great Place to Work Canada and Statistics Canada, businesses investing in green spaces report higher productivity and reduced absenteeism.

For Joel, success in business isn’t just about making money; it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives. The most fulfilling part of his work is hearing how plants have improved his clients’ well-being. “When people tell me how much better they feel with plants around, it’s incredibly rewarding,” he says. “This isn’t just about decoration; it’s about boosting health and happiness.” Plants purify the air, reduce stress, and create a comfortable environment, which can help strengthen the immune system. With one in three Canadians facing mental health challenges, it’s clear that plants play an important role in improving well-being.

Joel is passionate about partnering with businesses that understand the value of plant care as an investment in creating a healthier, more vibrant workplace.

Kristine Jarvis, owner of Elgin Media GroupIn a world that constantly demands more, Joel and Kristine’s approach to work-life balance serves as a reminder that success isn’t just about financial gain. It’s about the quality of moments shared and the care invested in both businesses and families. Their journey proves that with determination, balance, and a little greenery, it’s possible to thrive, not only in business but in life itself. Their story is a testament to the idea that success is a journey, made richer when we have the right people and the right plants along for the ride.

And speaking of thriving in the community, Kristine is also organizing the Life In Elgin Spring Expo & Artisan Market, which will take place on March 1st & 2nd, at Elgin Centre. This exciting event will feature vendors, prizes, and entertainment, with promotional support from MYFM radio, e-billboards and of course, Life In Elgin magazine.
